Report Builder 2.0 Released!

Thursday November 6, 2008
If you've been awaiting the release of Report Builder 2.0, you can exhale! The product, originally expected to be released with SQL Server 2008, is now available as a free download from the Microsoft Download Center.

Report Builder 2.0 features vast improvements in report layout, wizards to make report creation simple and other visualization techniques that take advantage of SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services

Because there is more capability, there is more complexity. I learned 1.0 fairly quickly with little training. 2.0 has been a challenge. First, the defaults to a pivot table format, and if you are not familiar with them your reports come out weird. And because of a bug in 2.0, I can’t run the report within 2.0. I can view it in design mode, but have to save it and run it in Report Manager. Once saved, I have yet to find a way to modify the reports, which was a feature we were excited about with 1.0. One user creates a report, the next modifies to their own needs, putting it into the hands of less sophistocated users. I’m sure I’ll learn, but the change is the most radical I’ve seen in new versions and not intuitive if you’ve already been playing with 1.0
