Cons • Technical accuracy is somewhat questionable
• Publisher's website does not contain errata/updates to the book

Guide Review
A Little Too Ambitious
Dave Perkovich seems to have bitten off a little more than he could chew by attempting to cover both the 70-228 and 70-229 MCSE/MCDBA exams in a single book. Furthermore, some of the technical details in the book are just plain inaccurate. Those things aside, this book is a great way to get started with SQL Server. It contains tons of hands-on examples and step-by-step procedures to get you quickly up to speed. If you have a test server and can work through all of the examples, you'll be a whiz by the time you're through with this book.

The book contains a number of review questions and two full-length practice exams in the text and on the accompanying CD-ROM. They do a good job of evaluating your knowledge of SQL Server, but they don't necessarily prepare you well for the exams. The questions are more knowledge-based than the skill-based items you'll see on Microsoft's exams.

When all is said and done, this book will get you well on the way to earning your MCDBA certification, but you should definitely not rely upon it as a sole reference when preparing to take the exam or you may find yourself shelling out another $125 for retake.
