SQL Server Migration Assistant 2012

By

SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) provides database administrators with a smooth way to transition from their existing database platform to Microsoft SQL Server. The migration assistants are able to transfer data to either a server-based SQL Server database or to Microsoft’s SQL Azure cloud-based database platform.

How SSMA Works

SSMA is able to migrate most data stored in your source database. This includes the table structures, table contents, stored procedures, functions, and triggers. You may find that your database contains some specialized features that SSMA can’t handle because they either are not supported in SQL Server or SSMA does not support direct migration of the functionality. For this reason, it is essential that you conduct a complete series of tests on the migrated database before moving it into production. You don’t want to be surprised after rolling it out to users!

When you first run the migration assistant, it walks you through a six-step migration process:
  1. Create an SSMA project
  2. Add databases to the migration project
  3. Select objects to migrate to SQL Server
  4. Connect to the SQL Server or SQL Azure database that will be the migration target
  5. Link the migrated tables
  6. Convert objects
SSMA will guide you through this process, step-by-step, using the wizard appropriate for your source database platform. When you’ve finished specifying the details of the migration, you will see a migration status windows that displays the progress SSMA makes in migrating your database from your original platform to SQL Server.

SQL Server Migration Assistant for Microsoft Access

The Microsoft Access edition of SQL Server Migration Assistant is capable of migrating Microsoft Access databases made with Microsoft Access 97 (or later) to the following database platforms:
  • SQL Server 2005
  • SQL Server 2008
  • SQL Server 2008 R2
  • SQL Server 2012
  • SQL Azure
The requirements for using the Microsoft Access version of SSMA include:
  • Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 running as the operating system on the computer that will run SSMA. (Note that this does not need to be the same system running SQL Server.)
  • 1GB of RAM
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or later. You may download the latest version of the .NET Framework from Microsoft before beginning.
  • DAO Provider 12.0 or 14.0. The easiest way to obtain this is to install Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010 on the system performing the migration. Alternatively, you may download the provider directly from Microsoft.
  • If you plan to move your database to SQL Azure, you will also need the SQL Server Native Client (SNAC) version 10.5 or later. This is available as part of the free SQL Server 2012 Feature Pack from Microsoft.

SQL Server Migration Assistant for Oracle

The Oracle edition of SQL Server Migration Assistant is capable of migrating database from Oracle 7.3 or later to the following database platforms:
  • SQL Server 2005
  • SQL Server 2008
  • SQL Server 2008 R2
  • SQL Server 2012
  • SQL Azure
The requirements for using the Oracle version of SSMA include:
  • Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 running as the operating system on the computer that will run SSMA. (Note that this does not need to be the same system running SQL Server.)
  • 1GB of RAM
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or later. You may download the latest version of the .NET Framework from Microsoft before beginning.
  • Oracle Client 8.1.7 or later. The version of Oracle Client you use must be at least the same version (or higher) as your Oracle database server.

SQL Server Migration Assistant for MySQL

The MySQL edition of SQL Server Migration Assistant is capable of migrating database from MySQL 4.1 or later to the following database platforms:
  • SQL Server 2005
  • SQL Server 2008
  • SQL Server 2008 R2
  • SQL Server 2012
  • SQL Azure
The requirements for using the Sybase version of SSMA include:
  • Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 running as the operating system on the computer that will run SSMA. (Note that this does not need to be the same system running SQL Server.)
  • 1GB of RAM
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or later. You may download the latest version of the .NET Framework from Microsoft before beginning.
  • MySQL Connector/ODBC v5.1

SQL Server Migration Assistant for Sybase

The Sybase edition of SQL Server Migration Assistant is capable of migrating database from Sybase ASE 11.9 or later to the following database platforms:
  • Sybase OLEDB/ADO.Net/ODBC provider. This is available on your Sybase ASE media.
